Walmart Partners With OpenAI To Launch AI-First Shopping Experiences

Walmart has announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring AI-first shopping experiences to customers and Sam’s Club members, enabling purchases directly through ChatGPT with Instant Checkout. The collaboration aims to transform retail from reactive to proactive, allowing AI to anticipate customer needs and simplify everyday shopping.
“Traditional eCommerce experiences search bars and long item lists are evolving. A native AI experience that is personalized, contextual and multimedia is coming,” said Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc. “This partnership with OpenAI is a major step toward that future.”
Under the collaboration, AI will enhance the shopping journey by planning, predicting and streamlining purchases. Walmart and Sam’s Club are already leveraging AI across operations, from improving product catalogs and reducing fashion production timelines to speeding customer care resolution by up to 40%. The company is also promoting AI literacy among its associates through training and ChatGPT Enterprise.
“AI can make everyday purchases simpler,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Our partnership with Walmart is one way AI can help people every day.”
Walmart emphasizes that AI is designed to enhance, not replace, human interaction removing friction and making shopping smarter, faster and more enjoyable, while maintaining its focus on saving customers money and improving everyday life.
