Textile Exporters Eye India–U.S. Talks To Unlock Tariff Refunds
Indian exporters are pinning their hopes on diplomacy rather than litigation to recover funds tied up in U.S. tariff disputes, as prolonged legal processes continue to offer limited clarity and slow outcomes.
Businesses across sectors such as steel, aluminium, engineering goods and select manufactured products remain affected by the additional duties imposed by the United States in earlier trade actions. With refund mechanisms still unresolved, exporters are increasingly looking toward improving bilateral relations between New Delhi and Washington as a more viable path to relief.
Industry stakeholders believe that evolving geopolitical dynamics, closer economic engagement, and deepening supply chain cooperation between the two countries could provide the right backdrop for a negotiated settlement. They argue that a constructive trade dialogue may help unlock pending claims that have remained in limbo for years.
Export promotion bodies have urged the government to prioritise the issue in ongoing trade discussions with the U.S., highlighting the immediate financial impact on exporters. Recovering these funds, they say, would ease liquidity pressures at a time when businesses are grappling with subdued global demand, elevated freight costs, and exchange rate fluctuations. For small and medium enterprises, in particular, such refunds could significantly improve their ability to compete in the American market.
While trade analysts caution that diplomatic goodwill alone may not guarantee a resolution, they acknowledge that stronger India-U.S. strategic ties spanning technology, defence, and manufacturing, could help create momentum for a pragmatic outcome. Any final settlement, however, would still depend on regulatory approvals and legal processes within the U.S. system.
Despite the uncertainties, exporters remain cautiously optimistic that sustained engagement at the government level could eventually translate into tangible relief.
