OEKO-TEX Organic Cotton Certification Sees 272% Surge

The demand for credible organic cotton certification is gaining strong momentum across the global textile industry, driven by increasing scrutiny around sustainability claims and supply chain transparency. Reflecting this shift, the OEKO-TEX Organic Cotton certification has witnessed a remarkable 272% year-on-year growth as of 31 March 2026, highlighting the industry’s growing preference for verified and standardised solutions.

In an industry where production is fragmented across multiple countries and stakeholders, ensuring the authenticity of organic cotton has become a critical challenge. OEKO-TEX Organic Cotton certification addresses this complexity by offering a comprehensive, end-to-end system designed to safeguard traceability and integrity throughout the entire value chain.

At the core of the certification is a robust chain-of-custody framework that begins at the farm level. Ginning acts as the first critical control point, marking the entry of raw cotton into the textile supply chain. From there, digital transaction certificates are used to track every ownership change, ensuring transparency and accountability at each stage.

A key differentiator of the OEKO-TEX system is its closed-loop GMO testing protocol. Both raw fibre and yarn undergo testing exclusively within OEKO-TEX’s global network of 17 accredited institutes. This approach allows for precise identification of whether any contamination is accidental or the result of deliberate blending with conventional cotton, an essential safeguard in maintaining the integrity of organic claims.

Digitalisation is further strengthening this framework. Following successful pilot programmes in India and Bangladesh, OEKO-TEX has partnered with TextileGenesis, a Lectra company, to digitise transaction certificates. This integration brings physical material flows and certification data onto a single secure platform, significantly enhancing traceability while reducing administrative burden for manufacturers and brands.

Beyond traceability, the certification also places strong emphasis on chemical safety and regulatory compliance. Products are tested for a wide range of harmful substances, including pesticides, banned azo dyes, pentachlorophenol, PFAS, cadmium and lead, ensuring alignment with major global regulations such as REACH, US CPSIA and EU POP. This comprehensive approach not only protects consumers but also reinforces confidence in certified organic products.

Importantly, OEKO-TEX Organic Cotton certification aligns closely with broader sustainability goals. By supporting practices that promote soil health, regenerative agriculture and biodiversity, it contributes to a more resilient and environmentally responsible cotton ecosystem. Additionally, synergies with other Oeko-Tex standards, such as ECO PASSPORT for chemicals, help streamline compliance processes and reduce redundant testing requirements.
