Giriraj Singh Opens Medical Textiles Testing Lab At AMTZ

Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated a state-of-the-art Medical Textiles Testing Laboratory at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Visakhapatnam on 30th May, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s medical and technical textiles ecosystem.

During his visit to the AMTZ campus, the Minister reviewed various manufacturing and research facilities supporting the country’s growing healthcare technology and technical textiles sectors. He was received by Dr. Jitendra Sharma, Managing Director and Founder CEO of AMTZ, who briefed him on the zone’s initiatives aimed at promoting innovation, manufacturing excellence and quality assurance in medical technologies.

The newly inaugurated Medical Textiles Testing Laboratory has been established to test and validate a wide range of healthcare and technical textile products, including surgical gowns, face masks, personal protective equipment (PPE), surgical drapes and wound-care materials. The facility is equipped with advanced testing capabilities to evaluate critical performance parameters such as barrier protection efficiency, microbial resistance and product safety, enabling manufacturers to meet stringent quality and regulatory requirements.

Industry stakeholders noted that the laboratory will provide an important testing and certification infrastructure for India’s expanding medical textiles sector, supporting product development, quality compliance and export competitiveness.

As part of the visit, the Minister also toured the IMEDS manufacturing facility, where surgical skin staplers and sterile wound-closure consumables are being produced, highlighting the growing integration of medical devices manufacturing with technical textiles and healthcare innovation.
