Uster Unveils New Tool For Recycled Fiber Processing

Uster Technologies has introduced a new Recycling Opening Index (ROI) within its AFIS 6 R Recycling Module, providing spinners with a data-driven tool to evaluate and optimize the processing of recycled cotton fibers. The innovation is being officially launched at ITM 2026 in Istanbul, Türkiye.
As the textile industry accelerates its transition toward circularity, recycled fibers are becoming increasingly important in addressing challenges related to textile waste, resource scarcity, carbon emissions and regulatory compliance. However, maintaining yarn quality and process efficiency when using recycled raw materials remains a significant challenge for spinners.

Uster’s new ROI metric is designed to provide an objective assessment of the effectiveness of the fiber opening process during cotton recycling. The index measures the ratio of opened fibers to remaining yarn fragments, or “hard ends,” offering spinners a clear indication of material processability and potential profitability.
According to Uster, a low ROI value signals insufficient opening of recycled fibers, which can negatively impact spinning performance and lead to yarn irregularities, weak spots and inconsistent surface appearance. By providing a quantitative measure of opening efficiency, the ROI enables spinners to make more informed decisions when selecting and blending recycled materials.
The launch comes as the industry increasingly explores the use of post-consumer textile waste alongside the more widely recycled post-industrial waste stream. While post-industrial waste accounts for a smaller share of total textile waste, an estimated 95–99% is already recycled due to its consistency and ease of processing. In contrast, post-consumer waste presents greater challenges in terms of sorting, cleaning and fiber quality, making process optimization critical.

The AFIS 6 R Recycling Module combines the Recycling Opening Index with measurements of total yarn pieces per gram, enabling a more comprehensive evaluation of recycled fiber quality. Additional features include advanced recycling parameter analysis, enhanced short-fiber content measurement to identify non-spinnable fibers, and detailed nep and fiber-length assessments.
The optional module is available exclusively for the latest AFIS 6 platform, which also offers expanded measurement capabilities for synthetic fibers, including cut length and fineness analysis. Enhanced reporting tools and integrated Uster Statistics further support spinners in optimizing raw material selection and process performance.
With the introduction of the Recycling Opening Index, Uster aims to provide the textile industry with a practical tool for improving recycled fiber utilization while maintaining yarn quality, operational efficiency and profitability.
