Shree Renga Polyester Advances Sustainable Textiles With PLA Yarn Development

Shree Renga Polyester has successfully completed research and development work on Polylactic Acid (PLA)-based yarns, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. The project was undertaken in collaboration with the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) and received support from the Government of Tamil Nadu through a research grant.

PLA is a bio-based and compostable fibre derived from renewable resources, offering a viable alternative to conventional petroleum-based synthetic fibres. The successful development and laboratory-scale trials of PLA yarns at Shree Renga Polyester’s facility highlight the growing momentum within the Indian textile industry toward sustainable and environmentally responsible material innovation.

The company stated that the project represents an important step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuel-derived fibres while supporting the transition to circular and low-impact textile solutions. The achievement is the result of close collaboration between industry, research institutions and government agencies, demonstrating the value of a collective approach to textile innovation.
