CMAI Backs Standardised Indian Apparel Sizing Framework

The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has welcomed the move towards a standardized apparel sizing system based on Indian body measurements, calling it a major step for both consumers and the apparel industry.

Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor, CMAI, said the association has been involved in the initiative from the beginning, working with NIFT and industry experts to develop a sizing framework tailored to Indian consumers. The proposed standards will bring greater consistency to commonly used sizes such as S, M, L and XL, while allowing brands flexibility to maintain their individual fit preferences.

According to Mehta, standardized sizing could significantly reduce size-related product returns, particularly in e-commerce, where incorrect sizing remains a key challenge. It is also expected to improve consumer confidence, simplify purchase decisions and lower return and exchange costs for brands and retailers.

He added that India now has an opportunity to establish its own sizing benchmarks instead of relying on international standards that often do not reflect Indian body types.

While supporting the initiative, CMAI noted that implementation will be gradual as brands adapt new collections to the recommended measurements while managing existing inventories and sizing practices.

Mehta said the initiative is expected to deliver long-term benefits across the apparel value chain by improving consistency, customer experience and operational efficiency.
