Massive Fire Breaks Out At Surat Textile Market, Firefighters Use Hydraulic Platforms
A massive fire broke out at the Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Surat’s Saroli area shortly after midnight on Wednesday, triggering a large-scale firefighting operation, ANI reported.
The fire control room received an alert at 12.52am, following which fire tenders from three fire stations were rushed to the textile market.
Firefighters found the fourth and fifth floors of the building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke spreading through the premises. The blaze also spread through large quantities of textile stock stored in the passageways, making it difficult for fire personnel to enter the affected areas.
Chief Fire Officer Basant Parikh said a major fire call was declared immediately and around 15 fire brigade vehicles were deployed at the site. Additional firefighting units were also called in from nearby areas.
Due to dense smoke and poor visibility inside the building, firefighters used turntable ladders, hydraulic platforms and breathing apparatus to reach the affected floors and control the blaze.
Parikh said the building has double-height floors, making the fire equivalent to an elevation of nearly 30 metres and adding to the challenges faced by the firefighting teams.
The electricity supply to the building was disconnected as a precautionary measure.
There were no reports of anyone being trapped in the building so far, according to the report. Firefighters continued efforts to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the textile market.
