Surat Textile Industry Flags 66% Yarn Price Hike, Pending Rs 18 Crore GST Refunds

Surat’s textile industry has raised concerns over a sharp increase in yarn prices and delays in Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds, urging the Centre to intervene as rising costs put pressure on manufacturers and allied segments.

Industry representatives raised the issues during a meeting with Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Friday, warning that the situation could force several units to extend their Diwali shutdowns to more than 15 days.

Chetan Maniya, President of the Rapier Jacquard Weavers Association of Surat (RJWAS), said yarn prices had increased by as much as 66%, affecting the entire textile value chain. He urged the ministry to monitor price movements, take measures to control the escalation and address the dumping of low-priced yarn.

“Yarn prices have increased by 66%. Traders are increasing prices at every level. Overall charges for shipping are also adding to the rising prices. We request the ministry to monitor the price rise and control it,” Maniya said.

His appeal received support from participants at the meeting, with several attendees expressing concern over the impact of rising input costs on the industry.

The delegation also highlighted long-pending GST refund issues affecting metallic jari manufacturers.

Jala Satiya, representing the Secure Embro Thread & Jari Association (SEJTA), called for a notification to resolve the refund issue.

SEJTA President Tushar Kuvadiya said around Rs 18 crore in GST refunds remained unpaid to metallic jari manufacturers, with the issue having persisted for nearly three years despite being raised at various levels.
