Dow Launches Fluoro-Alternative Textile Repellent

Dow has launched DOWSIL™ IE-5619 DWOR Emulsion, a silicone-organic hybrid finishing agent designed to provide durable water and oil repellency for textiles while retaining softness, breathability and appearance.

The third-generation technology targets textile chemical formulators, mills and brands seeking fluoro-alternative solutions to meet evolving regulatory, environmental and consumer expectations.

“For years, achieving meaningful oil repellency in textiles typically required fluorinated chemistries, which are now facing increasing restrictions,” said Juan Carlos Medina, Global Strategic Marketing Director at Dow. “DOWSIL™ IE-5619 helps close that gap with a silicone-based, fluoro-alternative solution that delivers durable water and oil repellency while preserving the softness, breathability and aesthetics consumers expect.”

Supplied as a 30% solids concentrate, the emulsion is designed for conventional finishing processes across synthetic, natural and blended fabrics. Performance must be confirmed for each fabric type and source.

According to Dow, the product helps repel oil-based contaminants, including cooking oils, motor oil and sebum, alongside common water-based stains such as wine, coffee and milk. It is designed to maintain repellency after more than 20 home laundering cycles, depending on the fabric and formulation.

The technology also supports tape and logo adhesion without additional surface treatments. Typical application levels are 1–3% based on fabric weight, with curing for one to three minutes at a minimum temperature of 150°C. Processing conditions can be optimised to meet customer-specific requirements and performance targets.
