Bangladesh Textile Factories Resume Operations After Civil Unrest
Following recent civil unrest in Bangladesh, textile factories owned by Indian companies have restarted operations, according to a senior official from the Ministry of Commerce. The official, who requested anonymity, confirmed that after several days of disruption, these manufacturing units are now functioning smoothly.
Cross-border truck movement between India and Bangladesh has also resumed at the Petrapole border crossing, signaling a return to normalcy.
This development comes amid concerns voiced by India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, who recently expressed apprehension about Indian investments in Bangladesh, particularly in the textile sector. Sitharaman noted that many of these investments came from Tamil Nadu entrepreneurs, who initially anticipated success in the textile and garment industries.
Sitharaman has expressed hope that these investments remain safe despite the recent unrest. The resumption of operations and trade indicates a stabilizing situation in the region, though both governments continue to monitor developments closely.
