China’s Sustainable Cotton Acreage Touches 1.2 Million Acres
Cultivated acreage of Chinese sustainably grown cotton has touched 1.2 million acres in Xinjiang province, which accounts for 90 percent of overall Chinese cotton production.
The province is projected to produce 170,000 tons of sustainably grown cotton in the 2023-24 season.
The sustainable cotton project is being managed by the China Cotton Association under an initiative called ‘China Cotton Sustainable Development Project’ (CCSD).
The sustainable cotton is being grown without using chemical fertilisers and pesticides, with a focus on soil health, water, soil health, biodiversity protection, and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Focus is also being put on cotton quality and traceability, and the occupational health, safety, welfare, and social responsibility of cotton farmers.
The sustainable grown cotton and its production methods are also being audited and certified by a third-party certification company.
