Chinese Pilot Project To Grow 170,000 Tons Sustainable Cotton
A Chinese pilot farm project to grow sustainable cotton is expected to produce 170,000 tons of sustainable cotton this year.
The pilot project is being run by the Cotton China Sustainable Development Program (CCSD) in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
“The project to grow sustainable cotton was first started in 2021 and till date has produced 260,000 tons,” Chinese media reports stated.
The CCSD was jointly launched by the CCA and four other textile industry associations in June 2021 and intends to build the first system of sustainable cotton standards, identification and evaluation.
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region accounts for 90 percent of Chinese cotton production and 20 percent of global cotton production.
According to Wang Jianhong, Secretary General of the China Cotton Association (CCA), close attention is paid to use of water, soil health biodiversity conservation and greenhouse gas reduction.
He also informed that the cotton will be certified for its sustainable properties in the future.
