Cintas Partners With Honda To Transform Uniforms Into Automotive Insulation

Cintas Corporation has joined forces with Honda to give a sustainable second life to end-of-life rental uniforms worn by Honda associates across their U.S. manufacturing and research facilities. The uniforms, after reaching end-of-life, were transformed into shredded fibres, which were repurposed as sound-absorbing insulation in Honda and Acura vehicles.

This collaboration aligns with Cintas’ commitment to extend product lifespan and promote circular economies. “Partnering with Honda on a programme like this exemplifies our goal of leading A Shared Drive for Better,” stated Christy Nageleisen, Vice President of Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) at Cintas. The project not only showcased innovative re-use, but also enhanced the company’s customer-driven innovation.

Cintas’ culture of curiosity and collaboration, coupled with Honda’s capabilities, facilitated the initiative. “It takes collaboration and curiosity for these types of opportunities to materialize,” Nageleisen emphasized, highlighting the combined effort that led to the project’s success.

Uniforms used by Honda associates in Alabama and North Carolina underwent evaluation before recyclable end-of-life garments were transformed into shoddy—a new textile produced by shredding existing fabrics. This shoddy was then converted into insulation for new Honda and Acura vehicles, promoting sustainability in the automotive industry.

While this initiative was tailored to Honda, Cintas aims to continue partnering with customers to explore novel uses for end-of-life products. The company’s established “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose” approach coupled with its extensive market presence positions Cintas to create more circular economies for its products.

“We’re always looking to explore products’ additional use cases, including repurposing an end-of-life product,” affirmed Bryan Colpo, Cintas Director of Merchandising. This partnership demonstrates a commitment to sustainable innovation and collaboration between industry leaders.
