East African Community Proposes Standardisation Of Garments

Following the lead of Indonesia, the East African Community (EAC) has proposed standardisation of quality parameters for garments, with the aim to assist trade by harmonising standards.

“The East African Standards Committee (EASC) has targeted various apparels which will focus on manufacturing defects, chemical restrictions, test methods and finally labeling,” media reports stated.

In another groundbreaking development for regional trade, the EAC Secretariat unveiled a new mobile application (App) dedicated to the elimination of non-tariff barriers (NTBs) among member countries.

This innovative app is expected to revolutionise the region’s trading landscape by streamlining the reporting, monitoring, and resolution of impediments, traders face as they conduct business across borders.

The EAC is made up of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania, with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
