Increase In Acreage To Boost Cotton Production In Myanmar

A total of 612,712 acres of cotton would be sown in Myanmar in the 2024-25 fiscal across 19 cotton plantation zones in six states and regions as against 576,324 acres in the earlier fiscal.

“This cotton acreage would be increased gradually to reach 747,000 acres by fiscal 2027-28,” Mynamar’s Union Minister for Agriculture U Min Naung said.

The Agriculture Minister informed this in a meeting with producers and growers of cotton plants of the state of Magway. Chief Minister of Magway, U Tint Lwin was also present at the meeting.

The Minister emphasised the importance of promoting cotton acreage, which would facilitate exports beyond domestic demand.

“Naung further said that more than 260,000 acres of cotton would be sown in four agricultural zones located in Magway,” GNLM reported.

He also urged government departments, textile industry and cotton farmers to collaborate and overcome difficulties and limitations encountered in cotton production.

Director-General of Agriculture Department Dr Ye Tint Tun urged farmers to use good quality cotton seeds to increase quality and yield and also shared the long-term benefits to cotton farmers.
