Section Of Bangla Workers Unions Reject New Govt Wage Hike
A section of Bangladeshi garment workers unions have rejected the new proposed wage hike by the Bangladesh government and are insisting on a minimum wage of Taka 20,000 per month.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian on November 7, informed that the wage has been hiked to Taka 12,500, up 56 percent compared to the current minimum wage of Taka 8,000.
Earlier last month, the Minimum Wage Board had fixed the minimum wages at Taka 10,400 after which Bangladesh witnessed violent protests of garment workers.
After Monnujan Sufian announced the new wage hike, it was called acceptable by Sirajul Islam Rony, President of the Bangladesh National Garment Workers League.
However, a section of worker’s unions rejected the new wage hike claiming that it fails to keep pace with the rising inflation.
Taslima Akhter, President of the Garment Sramik Samhati, rejected the announced wage and called it a mockery. She added the workers will not accept this wage proposal.
“The new proposed wages are unacceptable and so we denounce the proposal,” Nazma Akter, President of the Combined Garments Workers Federation also said.
