Technical Textiles On The Growth Path In India

The technical textiles sector in India is increasingly being recognized as a key future market. Since 2013, this dynamic sector has grown at an average rate of 12% annually, now accounting for approximately 13% of the entire Indian textile and clothing market, according to Invest India, a government organization. Over the past decade, the market volume has nearly doubled. In India, the production of industrial yarn has predominantly relied on polyamide, a field where Oerlikon Barmag has established a strong market position. “In recent years, we have commissioned plants for numerous customers,” states Dr. Wolfgang Ernst, Head of Sales for the Oerlikon Business Unit Manmade Fibers Solutions.

Rising Demand for Industrial Polyester Yarns
India’s construction boom, along with the increasing use of geotextiles and industrial textiles in various infrastructure projects, agriculture and aquaculture, presents significant growth opportunities for industrial polyester yarns. The 2021 industrial development programme initiated by the Indian government, which identifies technical textiles as one of the ten priority sectors, supports this expansion. A key objective of the programme is to reduce reliance on imports, given that a substantial portion of the technical textiles and yarns required in India have historically been imported.

Oerlikon Barmag, a machine and plant manufacturer based in Remscheid, Germany, has noted the growing trend towards high-quality technical textiles for the Indian market. “We are receiving an increasing number of inquiries from Indian customers for spinning systems for industrial yarns,” remarks Dr. Wolfgang Ernst. “What’s new is the strong interest from companies involved in downstream processes that are now looking to integrate backward into yarn manufacturing. This shift is largely due to the stricter regulations imposed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Until recently, industrial yarns were mostly imported from China, but to ensure the quality of these processed yarns, the Indian government has enforced strict regulations since last year. Consequently, it makes strategic sense for Indian textile producers to enter the yarn manufacturing sector.” This development was evident at this year’s Techtextil in Frankfurt, where Oerlikon Barmag’s experts engaged in a significant number of technical discussions with Indian customers and stakeholders.

Advanced Yarn Technology for Diverse Applications
Oerlikon Barmag’s industrial yarn technology offers a broad process window without compromising yarn quality. The company’s flexible spinning concepts accommodate a variety of yarn products suitable for numerous applications. Their portfolio includes processes for producing both polyamide and polyester yarns with specific physical properties tailored for a wide range of end uses. Whether for HMLS yarns used in car tires, geotextiles, safety belts or airbags, yarn producers can find customized solutions at Oerlikon Barmag, a leading provider of advanced yarn manufacturing technologies.
