Tiruppur Garment Exports Turn Positive In Feb & March
Apparel exports from the knitwear hub of Tiruppur in February and March reported growth after facing a slump in demand for more than a year.
Data available with the Tiruppur Exporters’ Association (TEA) show knitwear exports from Tiruppur grew 6.4 percent in February and 5.6 percent in March compared with same months last year.
Total garment exports from the country registered 4.8 percent increase in February and 1.7 percent in March as against the same period in 2023
“KM Subramanian, President of TEA, said that Bangladesh will have duty-free access to Europe till 2027,” the Hindu reported.
“With India expected to sign a trade agreement with the UK, Indian garments will be competitive and hence, large retailers are already looking for suppliers and booking factories in India,” he added.
“Tiruppur is expected to see almost 10 percent growth in exports in the coming months,” Subramanian observed.
According to Kumar Duraisamy, joint secretary of TEA, small retailers in Europe have exhausted their inventory and have restarted buying.
Further, almost 20 percent of MSME exporters in Tiruppur went out of business because of the decline in orders last year.
Hence, the existing units are running to full capacity now, are planning capacity additions and there is almost 20 percent labour shortage in Tiruppur.
