Two Storms Wreck Havoc Over Cotton Crop In Greece
The two storms which hit Greece in September are expected to have destroyed 60-70 percent of the cotton grown in the Thessaly region, which is a major hub for cotton production.
Thessaly located in central Greece accounts for 81,000 hectares of the 250,000 hectares under cotton cultivation in the whole of Greece
Media reports quoted Mohammed Darawsheh of the Hellenic Agricultural Organisation (ELGO) as saying that the destruction to the cotton crop has been great, following surveys done by him and the team.
Darawsheh said that within the Thessaly region, almost 50 percent or 40,000 hectares cotton has been cultivated in Karditsa, 27,000 hectares in Larissa and 9,300 hectares in Trikala.
According to Darawsheh, Storm Daniel destroyed 60-70 percent of the crop in Karditsa, 50-60 percent in Larissa and 40 percent in Trikala.
“Elias, the subsequent storm, Elias destroyed another 15-20 percent of the cotton crop across the Thessaly region. So totally 60-70 percent of the cotton crop has been wrecked,” he observed.
