Vietnamese Students Shirking Garment Technology Courses
The number of Vietnamese students enrolling to study courses in garmenting technology has fallen sharply, following workers and staff being laid off after the Covid-19 pandemic began
Students have been psychologically affected by the phenomenon of workers in this industry being fired by businesses during and after the Covid-19 outbreak.
This phenomenon has resulted in a serious shortage of textile and garment human resources, which is affecting the present and is also expected to affect in future also.
Dr. Phan Thi Hai Van, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City College of Technology said that before the pandemic began, around 800 students used to enroll in the garment technology course.
“In 2022, this number dropped to 73 students and just 39 students enrolled for the batch starting in 2023,” Dr Van added.
Due to this the campus recruitment done by various garment manufacturers has seen a sharp fall in recruitment of students
Dr. Van added that the main reason for the low enrollment was that during and after the Covid-19 epidemic, textile and garment enterprises laid off many employees due to fall in exports.
“From the beginning of 2023 till date, businesses are continuing to lay off workers in large numbers, which has psychologically affected the students,” he added
Dr Van feared that once export orders revive, these companies will need to recruit students in large numbers, but at that time there will be very few students to recruit.
