22 Handloom Weavers Honoured On National Handloom Day
President Droupadi Murmu underscored the importance of technology adoption and digital market access for the sustainable growth of India’s handloom sector while addressing the 12th National Handloom Day celebrations at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.
The President presented the prestigious Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards 2025, honouring 22 outstanding handloom weavers for their exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and contribution to preserving India’s rich weaving heritage. The awards included three Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards.
Highlighting the sector’s cultural and economic significance, Murmu said handloom has remained an integral part of India’s civilizational journey, reflecting the nation’s diversity while supporting livelihoods, women’s empowerment and sustainable development. She emphasized that modern technologies and digital platforms can play a transformative role in improving market access and ensuring long-term growth for the sector.
The President also noted the growing participation of young entrepreneurs bringing innovative designs and technology-driven approaches to handloom. She called for stronger institutional support and government-led hand-holding initiatives to encourage youth participation and preserve the legacy of traditional weaving.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the sector through policy support, technology adoption, design innovation, skill development and market promotion. Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita highlighted the need to blend tradition with innovation to enhance global opportunities for Indian handloom products.
A key highlight of the event was the release of four commemorative postage stamps celebrating India’s iconic handloom weaves.
