Luwa Marks 90 Years Of Air Engineering Excellence

Luwa Air Engineering, a pioneer in textile and industrial air engineering, is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1935 in Zürich, Switzerland, by Hans and Walter Bechtler, Luwa began as a manufacturer of oil- and coal-burning systems, with its name derived from the German words Luft und Wärme, air and heat. Over nine decades, it has transformed into a global leader known for innovative, sustainable and energy-efficient air solutions.

Luwa’s journey from its early mechanical systems to today’s digitally enabled, low-carbon innovations reflects a legacy of continuous evolution. Its breakthrough in air conditioning and filtration technologies has served diverse industries, especially textiles, nonwovens and hygiene.

From licensing the Pneumafil system in the 1940s to expanding across Europe, Asia and the Americas in the following decades, Luwa established a reputation for engineering excellence and customer-centric progress. Key milestones include the founding of Luwa India in the 1990s, its spin-off as Luwa Air Engineering AG in the 2000s, and joining the Nederman Group—The Clean Air Company in 2018, gaining enhanced R&D and global capabilities.

Operating from six engineering hubs in Switzerland, India, China, Singapore, USA, and Türkiye, and through agents in over 60 countries, Luwa delivers precision climate control systems that tackle challenges like fluctuating humidity, poor air quality and energy inefficiency. Its solutions ensure stable conditions, improved productivity and greater sustainability across textile and industrial processes.

Recent innovations such as the carbon-fibre axial fan are enabling significant reductions in energy use and CO₂ emissions, while Luwa’s growing role in the nonwovens and hygiene sectors highlights its adaptability to global needs, particularly in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

“We bring precision and reliability to both modern textile mills and emerging nonwoven industries, empowering them to create superior textiles and cleaner, safer products for a healthier world,” said Ulf Mattisson, CEO, Luwa Group.

With 90 years of engineering legacy and future-focused innovation, Luwa continues shaping tomorrow’s industries through smart, sustainable air solutions.
