Freudenberg Unveils 100% Bio-Based Binder-Free PLA/Wood Pulp Nonwovens

Freudenberg Performance Materials has achieved a major sustainability milestone with the launch of its new 100% bio-based, binder-free PLA/wood pulp wetlaid nonwovens. The innovation combines the natural water absorption and biodegradability of wood pulp with the strength and hot-sealability of PLA, delivering both environmental and performance benefits.

Developed using Freudenberg’s advanced wetlaid process, this material marks a technological leap beyond conventional spunlaid PLA nonwovens. Unlike spunlaid processes that rely solely on polymeric raw materials, wetlaid technology enables the integration of both polymeric and non-polymeric fibres, resulting in a unique, high-performance composition.

Diverse Applications
The new PLA-based wetlaid nonwovens cater to multiple markets — including horticulture, packaging, filtration, apparel and healthcare.

  • Horticulture: Offers optimal water absorption, root development, and controlled biodegradation, ideal for plant propagation in vegetable, flower and forestry cultivation.
  • Packaging: Enables sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, such as bio-based desiccant bags.
  • Apparel and Healthcare: Suitable for embroidery backings, interlinings and wound dressings.
