Asahi Kasei Secures Carbon Footprint Verification For Acrylonitrile

Asahi Kasei’s wholly owned South Korean subsidiary, Tongsuh Petrochemical, has obtained independent “Reasonable Assurance” verification for the product carbon footprint (PCF) of acrylonitrile produced at its Ulsan manufacturing site, strengthening the reliability of emissions data provided to customers.
Socotec Certification Japan audited the plant, data, processes and documentation used to calculate the product’s fiscal 2025 carbon footprint, covering raw material procurement through production. The assessment reviewed the calculation methodology, source data and reporting processes, providing a higher level of assurance than “Limited Assurance”.

Acrylonitrile is a chemical intermediate used in acrylic fibres, carbon fibre precursor materials, ABS resins and acrylamide. The verification responds to growing customer demand for independently verified environmental data as manufacturers seek to assess emissions across their supply chains.
Tongsuh Petrochemical obtained ISCC PLUS certification in 2021, supporting the traceability of bio-based and circular feedstocks. Since 2022, it has produced and marketed acrylonitrile using biomass-derived propylene through a mass-balance approach.
Asahi Kasei said it would continue working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from acrylonitrile production through improvements in proprietary catalyst and manufacturing technologies, alongside greater use of biomass-based feedstocks. These efforts aim to combine lower-carbon materials with reliable environmental data to support customers’ decarbonisation goals.
