Algae Scope Develops Seaweed-Based Alternative To PFAS In Textiles

Venice-based start-up Algae Scope has developed a bio-based additive made from residual seaweed biomass that can provide water and fire repellent properties to textiles, offering a potential alternative to PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals”.

PFAS are widely used in textile and other industrial applications to provide resistance to water, stains and fire. However, their persistence in the environment and ability to accumulate in living organisms have raised growing concerns over their impact on human health and ecosystems.

Algae Scope was founded by Natasha Yamamura, who developed the technology after witnessing the impact of PFAS contamination in Italy’s Veneto region. Drawing on her experience in the petrochemical industry, Yamamura developed a process to convert regenerative seaweed into a functional material for industrial applications.

The company supplies a seaweed-based powder to textile finishing companies, which can incorporate it into coatings for different fabrics. Algae Scope said its technology could help manufacturers respond to increasing regulatory and market pressure to reduce the use of PFAS in textile finishing.

The company has received support from the European Commission’s BlueInvest programme, including tailored coaching to strengthen its investor readiness, refine its business positioning and expand its industry network.

Algae Scope also won the Nature-Positive Production Systems category at EU Green Week 2026, generating additional industry connections and visibility.

The company is now preparing to move from small-batch production to industrial-scale manufacturing. Having raised around €330,000 in grants, Algae Scope is seeking a lead investor for €400,000 as part of a €1.2 million funding round. The proposed funding will support production equipment and additional personnel as the company works towards commercial deployment of its seaweed-based PFAS alternative.
