Australia Launches New Cotton Data Platform

Australia’s cotton sector is preparing for a major shift toward digital farming and enhanced supply chain transparency, with the launch of a new centralised data platform designed to streamline operations and boost global market confidence. Developed by the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) in partnership with growers and industry stakeholders, the Australian Cotton Industry Data Platform will securely collect, connect and share data across the cotton supply chain.

The platform aims to simplify data management, reduce duplication and save time for growers, consultants, gins, merchants and brands, while also meeting increasing global requirements for proof of sustainable and ethical production. The initiative is a key component of CRDC’s Clever Cotton Strategic Plan 2023–28, backed by a US$ 7 million investment. CRDC has appointed KPMG Australia to build the system, with development already underway.

CRDC Executive Director Allan Williams said the platform is being shaped through extensive consultation to ensure it is industry-owned, grower-controlled and secure. “This has the potential to be game-changing,” he said. “It will streamline reporting, support better decisions, and help Australian cotton meet rising global expectations for transparency.”

The benefits for growers include improved access to insights, reduced administrative workload, easier compliance with sustainability and regulatory standards and stronger traceability to enhance market access.

Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay said the platform aligns with the Strategic Roadmap for Australian Cotton, which aims to position Australia as a leading supplier of high-quality, responsibly produced cotton supported by verifiable data. “Providing credible evidence of our practices is increasingly essential,” he said. “This platform plays a crucial role in that future.”

The build phase has commenced, with beta testing planned for the 2025–26 season and full rollout expected by 2028, with features to be added progressively. Growers are being invited to participate in the upcoming workshops and encouraged to start preparing by reviewing how their existing data is stored and shared.
