Bangla Garment Factories Turn Green From Own Initiatives

Several Bangladesh textile and garment manufacturers have taken initial initiatives to green their factories and make them environmentally friendly.

A new study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) reports that factory owners have been motivated to take green initiatives on their own, while others have taken initiatives on pressure from garment brands.

The report found that 69.70 percent of factories invested in green initiatives through self motivation, while the second highest number of factories invested due to requirements of buyers.

The report added that 54.55 percent of factories invested in green initiatives due to their marketing strategy, while 39.39 percent did it to make themselves competitive in the market.

The study also informs that average green investment in large factories in the last five years stood at Taka 78.07 million, which is 36.98 percent of their total investment.

For small and medium sized factories the green initiative cost stood at Taka 1.37 million or 44.84 percent of their total investment.

As against this, Taka 0.16 million was invested by micro factories, which is 53.99 percent of their total investment.

The study has recommended developing a common framework for green standards and certification procedures based on global best practices.
