Bangladesh Unrest Halts Surat Textile Orders
The ongoing unrest in Bangladesh is posing significant challenges for Surat’s textile sector, which exports over Rs 100 crore worth of yarn and textile items to Bangladesh every month. The turmoil has led to a halt in new orders, raising concerns about payments for supplies already shipped.
Bangladesh, a major apparel production hub for renowned brands in the UK, US, and other countries, heavily relies on textiles from Surat and parts of South Gujarat. The country is also a key consumer of sarees, with Surat being a prominent saree production center.
As the situation in Bangladesh remains uncertain, some clothing manufacturers predict a potential shift in apparel production to India. Exporters suggest that this crisis presents an opportunity for Indian producers to establish a stronger presence on the international stage.
