Better Cotton Strengthens Regenerative Focus With Updated Standards

Better Cotton Initiative has reinforced its push toward regenerative agriculture with the release of an updated version of its Principles & Criteria (P&C), marking a key step in its transition to a regenerative standards system.
The new version, P&C v3.2, came into effect on April 1, 2026, following an independent assessment against recognised regenerative frameworks and extensive industry consultations. The update aims to align the standard more closely with evolving sustainability expectations while addressing on-ground farming realities.
Jannis Bellinghausen said the revised framework strengthens the focus on continuous improvement, particularly as climate change intensifies challenges for farming communities. He emphasised that the P&C remains a dynamic tool, regularly updated to stay relevant and effective.
While the core areas of soil health, biodiversity, water management, crop protection and fertiliser use remain central, the updated standard places greater emphasis on regenerative agriculture in farmers’ target-setting and annual planning. It also introduces refinements across management practices, natural resource use, crop protection, and decent work to improve clarity and auditability.
The latest revision builds on BCI’s earlier announcement at its 2025 conference in Izmir, where it outlined plans to transition into a fully regenerative standards system. Further updates across the broader standards framework are expected to be rolled out through 2026.
