BIS Releases Four New Technical Textiles Standards

At the recently held National Conclave on Standards & Regulations for Technical Textiles, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) released four new standards during the conclave.

There was a special session which discussed rationalisation of HSN codes and standards and implementation of QCOs, which was attended by more than 150 participants.

The new four new BIS standards include; IS 18266: 2023 for Medical Respirators and IS 18309: 2023 for Geosynthetics which are used in prefabricated vertical drains for quick consolidation of very soft plastic soil.

The third one IS 18158: 2023 dwelled on floor covering or artificial grass carpet made of synthetic yarn for landscapes and the fourth IS 18161: 2023 was for light weight jute sacking bags for packing 50 kg Mustard seed, Niger seed and Ragi.

The event encompassed five technical sessions focusing on Standards and Regulations under specialised areas of technical textiles like Protective textiles, Geotextiles, Build Tech, Oekotech, Medical textiles and other emerging areas of technical textiles.

Textiles Secretary Rachna Shah emphasised that quality standards are critical for technical textile products, as these products are highly specialised and technical in nature.

“Continuous formulation and revision of the standards for each product category and segment significantly impacts the consumption of technical textile products in India,” she said.

She opined that to amplify the production of technical textiles products, it is imperative to map them with the relevant HSN codes which will facilitate the streamlining of trade tracking and alignment with the HSN mapping requirements.
