Bluesign 2024 Impact Report Highlights Real Progress In Sustainable Textiles

Bluesign, the globally recognized system for sustainable textile production, has released its System Impact Report 2024, presenting a comprehensive, data-backed overview of how its global network of over 900 system partners is driving measurable environmental progress. The report highlights how a unified approach focused on continuous improvement is effectively reducing chemical and environmental risks across the textile value chain from chemical suppliers and manufacturers to textile producers and global brands.

As an independent third-party verifier and sustainability partner, bluesign supports companies in eliminating hazardous substances, lowering emissions and building long-term operational resilience. Its science-based standards and digital tools enable compliance with evolving global regulations while helping partners realize meaningful environmental improvements.

In 2024, bluesign system partners achieved reductions in the intensity of their CO₂ emissions, energy consumption and freshwater use for the fifth consecutive year. Notably, CO₂ emissions were reduced by 17%, energy consumption by 14%, and water use by 8%. These improvements were driven in part by an increased uptake of renewable energy and greater use of bluesign approved chemicals, showcasing the tangible benefits of a performance-based certification model.

bluesign conducted over 150 on-site assessments at partner manufacturing facilities during the year. These site visits included detailed evaluations of environmental performance, benchmarking, and customized roadmaps for sustainability improvement. Certification under the bluesign system requires evidence of ongoing progress, reinforcing accountability and year-on-year enhancement.

The report also details bluesign’s collaborative efforts with brand partners to improve traceability, support regulatory alignment and drive informed sustainability strategies. Through annual Supply Chain Impact Reports, brands gain critical insights into the environmental footprint of their certified supply chains, including emissions, energy and water use, chemical inputs, and waste. In 2024, 50% of reassessed brands showed improved sustainability performance, affirming the effectiveness of the bluesign approach.

“This report is not just about Bluesign, it’s about what’s possible when the industry aligns,” said Daniel Rüfenacht, CEO of Bluesign. “With more than 900 system partners, we’ve built a framework that empowers brands, manufacturers and chemical suppliers to deliver real results. These are not projections or pledges, they are robust outcomes based on primary data. This proves that when the right standards, tools and shared accountability are in place, sustainability in fashion is not only scalable, but achievable without compromising safety, style, performance or integrity.”
