Burberry Unveils Innovative Scarf Made With Brewed Protein Fibre
Burberry continues its legacy of textile innovation with the launch of a new blended scarf that incorporates Brewed Protein fibre, a cutting-edge lab-grown material. This introduction not only honours Thomas Burberry’s pioneering spirit—who revolutionized outerwear with the invention of gabardine—but also underscores the brand’s commitment to protection against the elements.
Crafted in Italy, the scarf features a luxurious blend of 62% wool, 8% cashmere, and 30% Brewed Protein fibre, produced through the fermentation of renewable plant-based ingredients. This innovative material combines warmth, durability and the luxury quality synonymous with Burberry products.
Kazuhide Sekiyama, Director and Representative Executive Officer of Spiber Inc., the biotech start-up behind Brewed Protein, commented: “The result of over 20 years of tireless research and development, Brewed Protein fibre is a revolutionary protein material built for the century ahead. Partnering with Burberry marks a significant expansion in the use of protein, serving as a key ingredient in realizing a circular society while showcasing the potential of the microorganisms that produce it.”
Burberry’s commitment to innovation extends beyond fabric. The brand is also exploring soilless agricultural techniques in cotton cultivation, partnering with Mediterranean Agro Technologies (Magtech) to develop fabric from hydroponic and organic cotton grown in greenhouses. This method conserves water and minimizes land use by utilizing only water and nutrients, substituting traditional soil with coconut fibre.
In addition, Burberry is collaborating with Circotex, a textile dyehouse, to implement unique waterless dyeing and finishing technologies powered by renewable energy. One of these innovative processes employs CO2 technology to dye yarns and fabrics, effectively eliminating water use in the dyeing process.
Caroline Laurie, VP of Corporate Responsibility at Burberry, stated, “We are constantly evolving our fabrics and solutions, from creating a blended scarf to exploring alternative manufacturing processes and groundbreaking agricultural techniques. By collaborating with our suppliers and start-ups,we challenge ourselves to innovate at the intersection of creativity and sustainability.”
With these initiatives, Burberry reaffirms its dedication to creating innovative products that inspire and protect customers while advancing sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
