China Commissions World’s Largest Single Location PTA Plant
China’s Sinopec Yizheng Chemical Fiber Company has commissioned the largest purified terephthalic acid (PTA) single location plant in the world.
PTA is primarily used as a raw material for producing polyester staple fibre (PSF)
With a production capacity of 3 million tons per year, the single site project will effectively drive and develop the downstream PSF industry.
The Sinopec PTA unit is recognised as one of the most complex chemical plants in the industry and has adopted intelligent production technology, while the equipment localisation rate is 97.5 percent.
Sinopec has invested more than Yuan 5 billion in the project located in Jiangsu Province and is expected to enhance the overall competitiveness and resilience of the textile industry value chain.
Sinopec began producing PTA for the first time in China in 1982 with a capacity of 36,000 tons per annum.
After years of adding new capacity, China has now become the world’s largest PTA producer and consumer.
As the world’s largest producer of PTA, China’s production capacity accounted for about 67 percent of the world’s total or 65.63 million metric tons in 2021.
