Chinese Cotton Production Decreases 6.1% In 2023
Chinese total cotton output stood at 5.61 million tons in 2023, down 362,000 tons or 6.1 percent compared with 2022, according to data of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Cotton cultivated acreage amounted to 41.82 million acres in the ongoing year, a decline of 7.1 percent or 3.18 million acres over the earlier year.
Average cotton yield amounted to 134.3 kg per acre, an increase of a marginal 1.1 percent or 1.5 kg per acre as against the previous season.
Xinjiang, which accounts for 90 percent of China’s cotton production witnessed unsatisfactory weather conditions like lower temperatures, more than normal rain and also long-lasting summers.
This data was drawn from a statistical survey of 31 provinces across China, while cotton acreage in Xinjiang is obtained through remote sensing.
