In the first ten months of the current year, China imported 1.38 million tons of cotton from various countries, a decline of 12.7 over the comparable months of earlier year.
However, between January and October this year, these cotton imports from Australia rose by a massive 20 times to 192,000 tons.
Chinese traders and importers had stopped or slowed down buying Australian cotton since 2022, after relations between the two countries got spoilt.
Since mid-2023, the relationship between Australia and China has normalised due to which importers have resumed buying Australian cotton.
In the first two months of the 2023-24 cotton season ending October 31, Chinese imports of Australian cotton was 94,000 tons, again a significant leap of 22.5 times year on year.
US is the biggest source of Chinese cotton imports, followed by Brazil and Australia.
