Coimbatore Corporation Launches Maru Nesavu Textile Waste Drive
The Coimbatore Corporation has launched a pilot initiative to collect textile waste separately from households in Ward 33 of the West Zone, aiming to prevent the dumping and burning of discarded textiles while promoting recycling and reuse.
Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja launched the Maru Nesavu (Reweave) campaign at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) in R.S. Puram on August 21.
As part of the initiative, a training and orientation programme was conducted for conservancy staff involved in the collection drive in the Kavundampalayam areas of Ward 33. More than 80 workers participated in the programme. Ravi Teja distributed collection bags to the workers and flagged off the vehicles deployed for the campaign.
Under the initiative, residents in the West Zone have been requested to hand over unwanted textile waste to conservancy workers every Wednesday. The collected material will subsequently be segregated and directed for recycling and reuse.
The initiative covers a wide range of household textiles, including old clothes, bed sheets, blankets, pillow covers, curtains, towels and other discarded or torn fabric materials.
The Corporation plans to initially implement the programme in the West Zone before expanding it to other zones in a phased manner.
