Cotton Australia Envoys Visit India To Explore Duty Free Exports

Cotton Australia’s Chairman and CEO have returned from a trip to India where they discussed about the potential for increased free trade with Australian cotton growers.

“Chairman Nigel Burnett and CEO Adam Kay were invited to travel to India with the free trade agreement central to meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai,” Cotton Australia, a cotton trade body said.

One of the highlights was attending the global textile event Bharat Tex and another key event was a meeting with Textiles Minster Piyush Goyal.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss the importance of increasing the free trade quota for Australian cotton with Piyush Goyal,” Adam Kay said in a press release.

“We received a very positive response to that meeting and others involving senior government and industry officials,” Kay added.

“We also discussed possible areas of collaboration to support growth of Australian cotton exports to a country which has massive potential, considering it has one fifth of world’s population,” he stated.

Both presented at the Australia Connect session and articulated the Australia cotton industry’s impressive credentials in fibre quality and sustainability.

The delegation visited tribal areas in remote locations where they had an opportunity to speak directly with conventional and organic cotton growers as well as visit ginning and spinning mills.

“We visited Yavatmal where we sat on rugs among local cotton growers and learnt about their community, their lives and how they grow cotton,” Nigel Burnett also said.

“They don’t have much, but their commitment to growing cotton and their spirit and work ethics were impressive. It was an honour to spend time with them,” he too added.

Adam Kay expressed confidence that their visit will yield results for Australian cotton growers and will continue discussions with government and trade officials in Australia and India.,
