Eri Silk & Pineapple Fibre Set The Tone For National Conclave On Natural Fibres

In New Delhi, actor Ashutosh Rana drew attention not only for his presence but for his attire, a handcrafted Garo jacket woven from Eri silk and pineapple leaf fibre. The ensemble set the tone for the grand poster unveiling and media meet of the upcoming National Conclave, themed “Weaving India Together, Natural Fibres, Innovation and Livelihoods from the North East and Beyond.”
The Ministry of Textiles, in partnership with ICAR, the Government of Meghalaya, the Central Agricultural University (Imphal) and the College of Community Science (Tura) is organizing the conclave from October 6–8. The gathering is expected to bring together policymakers, artisans, academics, entrepreneurs and innovators to highlight the role of natural fibres in shaping India’s sustainable future.
At the launch event, dignitaries were honoured with handcrafted A’chik Pandra stoles made by Meghalaya artisans highlighting the Northeast’s deep-rooted textile traditions. Rana, presented with a Borang (traditional Garo cloth), remarked that the initiative was “bringing the soul of India’s villages to the national stage.” His jacket, blending the softness of Eri silk with the durability of pineapple fibre, reflected the spirit of sustainability and inclusivity at the heart of the conclave.
The exhibition accompanying the meet showcased innovations in natural fibres, eco-friendly dyes and sustainable lifestyle products. A highlight was the display by students of the College of Community Science, Tura, featuring creations that link grassroots innovation with women’s entrepreneurship and community development.
Centred on fibres such as Eri, Muga, Ramie, Banana and Nettle, the conclave aims to reframe India’s textile narrative on the global stage, aligning with national priorities such as Atma Nirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local, and PM Mitra Parks.
The preview also spotlighted the National Ideathon, which received 47 entries from students across India. Ten projects have been shortlisted and will be presented at the conclave. With more than 275 participants and over 100 artisans and entrepreneurs expected, the conclave promises to be a dynamic platform for dialogue, innovation and tradition.
Among those present at the Delhi event were Dr. Mridula Takur Pradhan, Dr. Rajbir Singh (ICAR), Atul Jain (DRI) and Dr. Anupam Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of CAU.
