EU, Australia Launch Talks For Horizon Europe Collaboration

The European Commission and Australia have formally opened negotiations for Australia’s association with Horizon Europe, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation in research and innovation.
The move follows recent high-level engagements, including the visit of Ursula von der Leyen to Australia, and reflects a broader push to deepen ties across trade, technology, and strategic sectors.
Australia is already actively involved in Horizon Europe, participating in over 200 collaborative projects. Formal association would allow Australian organisations to access programme funding directly and engage on equal footing with EU member states and other partner countries.
The expanded partnership is expected to enhance long-term collaboration between researchers, businesses and public institutions, while simplifying administrative processes under a unified framework.
Both sides aim to accelerate joint innovation across key areas including emerging technologies, clean energy, climate action, healthcare and resilient supply chains, reinforcing competitiveness and economic resilience.
