EU Textile Waste Rules To Be In Place By 2028

All regulations mandating European garment and fashion brands to manufacture garments in a better sustainable process will be implemented by 2028.

“The fashion industry has in a manner got away by not implementing regulations, so it’s now time to react,” EU Environment Commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevičius said at the Global Fashion Summit.

After food, housing and transport, textile consumption in Europe has the fourth highest impact on the environment and climate change

The Commission is in the process of drafting 16 legislations that will put responsibility on clothing brands to reduce environmental impact of the garment production process.

The legislation will require brands to either collect a percentage of the textile waste that is equivalent to percentage of their manufacturing, or pay a fee towards efforts put by local government authorities to collect the waste

“According to the commissioner, the fee amount will be increased gradually every year but will be surely higher than 5 percent of production,” Devdiscourse reported.

The EU has set a goal for garment brands to produce more fashion clothing that can be reused and which can also be recycled easily by 2030.
