Galeries Lafayette Set To Open Mumbai Flagship Store Next Month

Galeries Lafayette, one of the world’s most iconic department stores, is set to open its first Indian flagship store early next month at the historic Turner Morrison and Voltas House buildings in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda district.

The launch marks a defining moment in India’s luxury retail evolution, melding the French brand’s 130-year heritage with the Aditya Birla Group’s deep understanding of the Indian market.

The opening follows the 2022 partnership between Galeries Lafayette and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL), part of the Aditya Birla Group, to bring the brand’s flagship stores and omnichannel experience to India.

With India’s luxury market projected to reach US$ 85 billion by 2030, rising affluence and aspirational consumption are fueling rapid growth. Mumbai, India’s financial and cultural hub, naturally serves as the ideal launchpad for the French luxury icon.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, said, “Luxury in India today stands at the threshold of transformation. A new generation of globally exposed consumers is redefining aspiration and identity through luxury. Our partnership with Galeries Lafayette marks a coming-of-age moment for Indian retail, creating a world-class destination in the heart of Mumbai that unites global excellence with Indian elegance.”

Nicolas Houzé, Executive Chairman, Galeries Lafayette Group, added, “Opening our first store in Mumbai is a defining milestone in our international journey. Partnering with the Aditya Birla Group, a family-owned conglomerate that shares our values, provides a strong foundation. This flagship blends French creativity and innovation with the vibrancy of India, bringing the French Art of Living to a new global audience.”

The collaboration combines Galeries Lafayette’s global retail expertise with ABFRL’s leadership in India’s premium and luxury segments to establish a scalable, structured model for high-value retail.

Ashish Dikshit, Managing Director, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd, noted, “Galeries Lafayette ushers in a new paradigm of luxury that extends beyond retail to cultural experiences. With this flagship, we are setting new benchmarks in assortment, service and experience strengthening India’s position on the global luxury map.”

To commemorate the milestone, Galeries Lafayette and the Aditya Birla Group hosted an exclusive celebration on the Arabian Sea. From the Gateway of India, a flotilla of yachts ferried Birla and Houzé to a curated evening event marking the brand’s symbolic arrival in India.

Spanning 90,000 sq. ft. across five levels, the flagship is designed by London-based Virgile + Partners, reimagining the brand’s Parisian aesthetic through an Indian lens. The store will house over 250 global luxury and designer brands alongside personal styling, concierge services, private lounges and cultural programmes to deepen customer engagement and loyalty.

Galeries Lafayette Mumbai embodies Art de Vivre and Joie de Vivre, offering India’s next-generation consumers a seamless blend of fashion, culture and design. The partnership was facilitated by Pike Preston, ensuring alignment with global best practices while adapting to India’s evolving retail landscape.

The Galeries Lafayette Mumbai flagship store officially opens early next month at Turner Morrison Building, 16 G. Vaidya Road, Kala Ghoda, Fort, Mumbai.
