Garment Brands Exit From Myanmar Opportunity For India
The decision to gradually or fully stop production of garments in Myanmar by various brands and retailers like M&S, Inditex and H&M can be turned into an opportunity for Indian garment exporters.
H&M followed in the footsteps of Inditex, which owns Zara and announced that it will slowly stop sourcing garments from the South East Asian country.
The garment brands and retailers have planned to do so after reports surfaced of exploitation of workers in various garment factories
Estimates indicate that these brands source 8-10 percent of their garment requirements from Myanmar garment factories.
So, although these brands source from other Asian countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia, Indian garment exporters should grab this opportunity to divert sourcing to India.
India ranks fourth among global clothing exporters and its share of global garment exports is between 4 and 6 percent, so there is a big prospect for Indian apparel exporters to increase exports.
