GOTS 8.0 Strengthens Textile Supply Chain Accountability

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has announced the release of Version 8.0 of its processing standard for organic textiles, introducing enhanced requirements across environmental management, chemical controls, governance and supply chain due diligence.

The updated standard strengthens provisions related to air emissions, waste management and product safety, while introducing new criteria addressing circularity and microfibre management. It also updates residue testing protocols and formalises governance requirements, including ESG disclosure, anti-corruption policies and conflict-of-interest safeguards.

A key highlight of Version 8.0 is the introduction of mandatory due diligence processes aligned with OECD guidelines. The revised framework aims to provide certified entities with clearer guidance as global regulatory scrutiny intensifies across textile value chains.

According to Global Standard Managing Directors Rahul Bhajekar and Claudia Kersten, the new version reflects an extensive and collaborative revision process involving global stakeholders. The updated standard is positioned not only as a certification benchmark but also as a governance system covering how textiles are produced, verified, claimed and labelled, ensuring traceability and integrity across the supply chain.

Among the major updates, Version 8.0 introduces stronger worker protection measures, including safeguards against risks from extreme heat and humidity. Climate-related criteria have been elaborated, requiring clearer greenhouse gas inventory documentation for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. GMO verification protocols have been tightened to improve confirmation of non-GMO cotton fibres.

Chemical management has been significantly strengthened with the introduction of a clearer Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL), enhanced controls on chemical inputs, specific limits for free aniline in indigo dyes, and updated testing methods reinforcing the PFAS ban. The new version also incorporates endocrine disruptor assessments aligned with European Union legislation.

Circularity receives dedicated attention, allowing certified products to remain within GOTS certification through repair, resale and other circular business models. Additional measures address microfibre release during processing, improved textile waste management and application of the waste hierarchy principle prioritising prevention, reuse and recycling.

Durability testing requirements have been expanded to enhance product longevity, while new packaging rules promote recycled content and restrict harmful materials. Hygiene product safety standards have also been strengthened, including updated residue testing for tampon products.

The accompanying Manual for Implementation has been expanded to provide improved guidance on due diligence, human rights compliance and internal audit procedures.

The revision process, conducted every three years, included two rounds of public consultation in 2025 and was aligned with global sustainability initiatives, including the ISEAL Alliance Code of Good Practice.

Following a transition period, GOTS Version 8.0 will become fully effective from 1 March 2027, reinforcing its role as a leading global benchmark for responsible organic textile production.
