Gujarat’s Textile Sector Spotlighted As Growth Driver At Vibrant Gujarat Meet

The textile sector took centrestage at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) in Rajkot, with industry leaders and policymakers highlighting its crucial role in Gujarat’s economic growth, employment generation and global competitiveness.

According to a release from the Chief Minister’s office, experts stressed that textiles are moving beyond traditional manufacturing to become a catalyst for innovation-led growth, sustainability and export expansion. Discussions focused on technological upgradation, design capabilities and strengthening India’s position in global textile markets.

Speakers noted that Gujarat’s textile industry has built a strong global identity but must continue investing in technology and innovation to stay competitive amid fast-changing fashion trends and quality demands.

The seminar saw participation from key industry stakeholders, including Welspun Group Resident Director Updeep Singh, Wazir Group Jt. MD Prashant Agrawal, Cotton Research Centre Scientist D.S. Patel, CITI Chairman Ashwinchandra and Cotton Association of India President Vinay Kotak. They observed steady growth in Gujarat’s textile ecosystem in recent years.

With the global textile industry valued at around US$ 900 billion, experts emphasized the need for quality, design and innovation to meet rising demand. Cotton remains a core strength, with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana leading production. Adoption of BT cotton in Gujarat has boosted farm productivity and pricing, the release noted.

Speakers underlined the need for coordinated efforts between farmers, industry and government to enhance cotton output and ensure better income for growers. Sustainability, eco-friendly manufacturing, skill development and support for SMEs have further strengthened the sector’s contribution to Gujarat’s GDP and exports.

While challenges such as raw material volatility, global competition and shifting market dynamics persist, participants expressed confidence that digitalisation, new marketing strategies and innovation-led production will bolster competitiveness.

The event also saw participation from international dignitaries, including Rwanda’s High Commissioner Jacqueline Mukangira.
