India Among Top Global Textile Exporters, Employs Over 45 Million: Economic Survey

The Economic Survey highlights India’s position as the sixth-largest exporter of textiles and apparel globally, with exports worth USD 34 billion in 2023. The sector remains a key contributor to GDP, industrial production, and employment, directly engaging over 45 million people, including a significant rural and female workforce. Nearly 80% of India’s textile capacity is concentrated in MSME clusters, reinforcing its inclusive growth.

Apparel accounted for 42% of India’s textile exports, followed by raw materials/semi-finished materials at 34% and finished non-apparel goods at 30%. Europe and the US remained major markets, consuming 66% of apparel exports, 58% of finished non-apparel goods, and 12% of raw materials. Other key destinations included the UK (8%) and the UAE (7%). Despite global disruptions, India’s textile exports remained resilient throughout the COVID-19 period (2020–2022).

The Survey underscores the role of government initiatives in strengthening the sector. Programs like PM MITRA, aimed at developing textile parks with world-class infrastructure, are expected to enhance integrated supply chains and attract foreign direct investment. The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), with an outlay of  Rs 1,480 crore, has approved 168 research projects in 2024 to drive innovation in man-made fiber (MMF) textiles. Additionally, the Scheme for Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) has been extended until March 31, 2026, to boost exports.

With strong policy support, research-driven innovation, and global demand, the Economic Survey concludes that India’s textile sector is well-positioned for sustained growth.
