Indonesia Starts Probe Into Massive Hike In Textile Imports

The Indonesian government has started an investigation into various imported textile products in order to safeguard the domestic industry.

The Indonesian Trade Safeguard Committee (KPPI), under the Ministry of Trade has initiated the probe after the Indonesian Textile Association (API) raised the issue earlier in the year.

The Ministry of Trade took into consideration the decline in the workforce in the industry and also the shrinking market of the local textile industry before starting the investigation.

The products under investigation include cotton woven fabric, cotton sewing thread, cotton yarn, manmade fibre filament yarn and also manmade fibre woven fabrics.

“We have noted preliminary signs of serious losses or threats of serious losses from the high increase in textile and garment imports,” KPPI Chairman Nugraheni Prasetya Hastuti said.

In a press release, the ministry said imports of these products increased to 29,908 tons in 2023 as against just 14,843 tons in 2019.
