Japan Bans PFHxS Use In Water Repellent Textiles & Apparels

Japan will ban the manufacturing and consumption of PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonic acid), which is an organic fluorine compound (PFAS) used in textiles and apparels.

PFHxS is mainly used to manufacture water repellent textiles and clothing and the Japanese Ministry of the Environment has imposed prohibition on imports of PFHxS.

In order to regulate use of PFHxS in textile and garments, the Chemical Substances Control Law has been revised. The law regulates chemical substances that are injurious to human health.

PFHxS is called a Class 1 Specified Chemical Substance and its use, import and manufacturing will be prohibited from February 1, 2024.

The ministry has also prohibited imports of rugs, apparels and fabrics that use PFHxS based water and oil-repellent treatments from June 2024.
