Jordan Develops Textile Waste Management Plan With EU And French Agency
In collaboration with the French Development Agency and funded by the European Union, Jordan is developing a plan to manage textile waste from its garment and textile factories. Led by the Ministry of Investment and the Amman Chamber of Industry, the initiative includes forming a committee to draft investment guidelines for the textile waste sector. The plan is expected to be completed by June next year.
Part of the Green Forward initiative, the project promotes sustainability across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) by advancing the circular economy. It focuses on agriculture, textile production, and waste management, aligning regional efforts with global sustainability goals.
Marlen Bakalli, project director for Jordan, highlighted the initiative’s £4 million EU funding and its presence across eight Arab countries: Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. The project aims to provide tailored technical support, create jobs, and harmonize policies to drive sustainable development.
Bakalli urged Jordan to establish policy frameworks to attract investments in textile waste management and support training programs to strengthen the sector.
The French Development Agency serves as a technical advisor, while the Ministry of Investment and Amman Chamber of Industry are coordinating stakeholder efforts. Lilly Formaleoni, regional manager for Jordan and Lebanon, emphasized the plan’s comprehensive approach, including evaluation tools to ensure effective implementation.
Formaleoni noted potential project expansion into sectors like electric vehicle battery waste management and other emerging fields, reinforcing the initiative’s role in addressing climate challenges through green economy strategies.
Inspired by the European Green Deal, Green Forward promotes regional cooperation and European expertise to transform environmental challenges into sustainable growth opportunities for MENA economies.
