MoT Implements Major Handloom Sector Programs
The Ministry of Textiles (MoT) rolled out key initiatives to boost the handloom sector in India. The National Handloom Development Programme and Raw Material Supply Scheme provided extensive support, including financial aid for looms, infrastructure, and marketing. The Weavers’ MUDRA Loan Scheme offered margin assistance, interest subvention, and credit guarantees.
Welfare measures included insurance coverage, scholarships, and financial aid for elderly weavers. The Raw Material Supply Scheme delivered yarn subsidies and transport support.
The Handloom Export Promotion Council boosted global visibility for Indian handloom products through international fairs. The ‘India Handloom’ Brand, launched on National Handloom Day in 2015, aimed to promote high-quality, eco-friendly handloom products, resulting in 1,998 registrations across 184 categories.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan provided economic relief, and state governments were urged to buy handloom products. The formation of 151 Handloom Producer Companies and the onboarding of weavers onto the Government e-Marketplace enhanced market access. Virtual and domestic fairs were organized to support marketing and sales of handloom products.
